An exhibition of Karen Downing’s vessels is on show at the revamped Plain English showroom in Marylebone, which was unveiled at a Private View on 17th May.
Creative Director and Founder Katie Fontana’s design for the new Blandford Street showroom is inspired by the formality and gentility of Edwardian design and engineering. Paying homage to the railways and train travel of yesteryear, the new design blends a utilitarian aesthetic with aristocratic and bohemians details, honouring the ideas of ritual, ceremony and tradition.
Karen Downing makes porcelain pots for everyday use: pots to be filled up, drunk out of, eaten from. The essence of her work is in its potential for use. The pots are thrown in batches of about a dozen of the same item. Although ‘repeats’ are thrown, because of the nature of porcelain, and of the throwing and firing processes, no two pots are ever exactly the same.
The exhibition will be open until 31st May at Plain English, 28 Blandford Street, W1U 4BZ.
